Titre : Curriculum development for pupils with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities in Finland

Résumé :

Pupils with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD) were the last group to be admitted to education in Finland. For almost one hundred years, these children were kept out of school because it was considered that they did not benefit from education. In 1997, they were finally accepted. Before this, researchers, teachers and disability associations used to cooperate at a national level to prepare a developmental curriculum suitable for these children. A study from 2010 showed that a curriculum model based on the development of a young child’s early years was being intensively used. This study also found that of all the teaching methods in use, the most popular ones were sensory and environmental enrichment and stimulation, as well as methods based on behaviour analysis. My presentation is based on interviews (over the years 2019-2021) with about one hundred special education teachers. When they work with their pupils with PIMD, these teachers use the above-mentioned developmental curriculum, which is completely different from the Finnish subject-based national curriculum. The special education teachers were asked how they use, evaluate and justify the developmental curriculum and how they would develop it. The findings are discussed in the framework of inclusion and justification.

Biographie : Raija Pirttimaa is a senior lecturer of special education at the Faculty of Education and Psychology of the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, and an adjunct professor at the University of Helsinki. She has also been a visiting professor at Addis Ababa University, where she participated in joint projects on inclusive teacher education. Her research interests focus on disability studies and education. She is especially interested in teaching pupils with PIMD and teacher training.
